Plein Air
“Art is born of an artist’s contact with the world around him, and the best vehicle for that contact is sketching.” - The Artist’s Guide to Sketching, by James Gurney and Thomas Kinkade, Watson-Guptill Publications
I regularly take my paints outdoors to find new inspiration and increase my visual vocabulary. The small plein air sketches that I create from these outdoor adventures add life to my studio paintings.
Sketching from nature helps keep an artist balanced, growing and from falling into dull mannerisms and formulas. When painting outdoors I attempt to absorb all the subtleties of color and light I observe. Those subtleties then make their way into my finished studio paintings.
